Bill Proposal for Product Liability Act

Proposed Bill Aims to Strengthen Liability of Vehicle Manufacturers in Product Liability Cases Involving Advanced Technologies

A proposed bill seeks to increase the burden of proof for vehicle manufacturers in product liability cases involving advanced technologies. Recent sudden unintended acceleration accidents have highlighted the difficulty for consumers in identifying the root cause of such incidents. The current Product Liability Act places the burden of proof on the victim to show that the product was defective, which is challenging for complex products like vehicles. To provide better protection for victims and hold manufacturers accountable, the bill would require manufacturers of products with advanced technologies to prove that the product was not defective at the time of supply and that any damage was not caused by a defect in the product.
