Alternative Test Mode for RDE Test of In-use Vehicle Compliance Test

Transport Pollution Research Center (TPRC) held a meeting with vehicle manufacturers to discuss an alternative test mode for the Real Driving Emissions test. Currently, it is developing an indoor testing mode using a dynamometer to replace the RDE test. This is to address challenges in conducting the RDE test such as difficulties of obtaining test vehicles, administrative burden and unfavorable testing conditions on the road. This alternative mode will ensure that both indoor and RDE tests meet the same requirements, offering a practical solution to the difficulties associated with performing tests on real roads. With upcoming EURO 7, it is expected that RDE testing will become even more stringent and diversified. TPRC emphasized that the implementation of alternative indoor testing methods for RDE is crucial to ensure compliance.

Major objective in developing the indoor testing mode:

  • The alternative mode shall meet the RDE requirements.
  • The driving energy shall be the same as in the RDE test.
  • Fine adjustment of VA and RPA shall be possible.
  • Separate cycles shall be developed for cold and hot starts.
  • The RDE test route shall be used as a baseline.
