The revision of the Act on the Promotion and Support for the Commercialization of Autonomous Vehicles (AV Act) was promulgated on July 27, 2021 to prepare a legal basis for establishing and operating a certification management system* for autonomous cooperative driving** to secure the safety of AVs. The certification management system will support the AV in responding to hacking attacks, threats, and its vulnerabilities, thereby serving as the foundation for the whole AV infrastructure, enabling safe communication and interaction between the AVs and the roadside equipment (RSE), and accelerating the era of safe autonomous driving and AV commercialization.
*Under the system, only certified AVs and RSE can share traffic information.
**Autonomous Cooperative Driving” enhances the safety and efficiency for the driving of AV by utilizing C-ITS (Cooperative-Intelligent Transport Systems) which provides accident-related information such as traffic conditions, sudden stop, and fallen objects to the driver in real time.
